The Relief of Derry Symphony

Commissioned by Derry City Council to celebrate the Tercentenary of the Siege of Derry. Shaun Davey writes, 'I felt the music should attempt to speak in terms of the most profound sympathy and respect for people who suffered so unavoidably in times of cruelty and lawlessness'. Performed by the Ulster Orchestra with conductor Gearóid Grant and soloists Liam O'Flynn, Rita Connolly and Gerard McChrystal.

'Shall I take my little black currach over the broad-breasted glorious ocean? O King of the bright kingdom, shall I go of my own choice upon the sea?'. Written by Shaun Davey in 1982 for orchestra, soloists, pipe band and choir, this recording incorporates live performances taken from both the premiere in Brittany in 1983 and the revised 1990 performance in Glasgow.

Gerald Barry's music has been described as 'the most exciting, most sheerly intense new music...for a long, long time'. This CD contains a selection of his most important chamber pieces, including the Piano Quartet No. 1, a set work for the Leaving Certificate music syllabus. The performers are the Irish group Nua Nós directed by Dáirine Ní Mheadhra.

Roger Doyle's Under the Green Time: 'An image of Ireland without the sweet Celtic wrapping, an ancient, hard Ireland, a kind of musical archaeology.' This programme of acoustic, electro-acoustic and traditional music was recorded live in The Hague in 1999 by the Netherlands Wind Ensemble with Brian Ó hUiginn (uilleann pipes), Sarah Grealish (vocals) and Roger Doyle (electronics).

Trimble: Songs and music for two pianos

'Joan Trimble's music is natural and fluent, devoid of contrivance or sentimentality'. A selection of works for two pianos and voice and piano, and the Phantasy Trio, performed by Patricia Bardon (mezzo-soprano), Joe Corbett (baritone), Una Hunt and Roy Holmes (pianos) and the Dublin Piano Trio.

Martin: Orchestral Music

Philip Martin performs his Second Piano Concerto and Andreja Malir, for whom it was written, performs the Harp Concerto. The orchestral piece, Beato Angelico, completes this programme played by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland under conductor Kasper de Roo.

Fairlight Memories cover

Fairlight Memories

The music on these CDs was composed on a Fairlight Computer Music Instrument between 1983 and 1988. The Fairlight was among the first synthesisers controlled by a computer and Roger Doyle 'made great use out of it' and has 'very fond memories of the Fairlight'. Works include Contents of the Pay-Jar and a suite derived from the music composed for The Love of Don Perlimplin and Belissa in the Garden.

Cool Steel Army cover

Cool Steel Army

‘Cool Steel Army’ is the title track of Roger Doyle's latest CD release. The disc features recordings of three new works by Doyle and includes ‘Adolf Gebler, Clarinettist’, the first in a series of planned 'cinema for the ear' projects. Scored for live orchestra, piano and female singer, with pre-recorded dialogue and sound effects, the work gives the listener the impression they are present at the screening of a film.

‘The Ninth Set’ is Volume 3 in Roger Doyle’s large-scale electro-acoustic Passades series. Constructed in five seamless sectors, sector 4 was awarded the Magisterium Prize at the 2007 Bourges International Electro-Acoustic Music Competition, France.
