Composers

This section introduces the music of Irish composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It is intended as a good starting point for anyone not familiar with Irish contemporary music.

Each composer's page provides a photo, a biography, most recent works added to CMC's collection and other information. You can also purchase CDs and scores by each composer, access features about the composers, or view any upcoming events which include their music.

An Irish composer is defined as anyone who was born or is permanently resident in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland.

Shaun Davey was born in Belfast and lives in Dublin.

Grant Davidson Ford works as a sound artist, composing and analyzing spatial music at the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Queen's University, Belfast.

Séamas de Barra studied music at University College Cork under Aloys Fleischmann, taking the degrees of BMus in 1977 and MA in 1980.

Jerome de Bromhead was born in Waterford and studied at various periods with A.J. Potter, James Wilson, Seóirse Bodley and Franco Donatoni.

Edgar Deale was born in Dublin. Apart from sporadic studies with Turner Huggard and W. J. Watson he was self-taught as a composer.

Raymond Deane was born in the west of Ireland. He moved with his family to Dublin in 1963, and gained his B.Mus degree from University College Dublin in 1974.

Gordon Delap is from Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. He studied music at Queen’s University, Belfast and City University, London.

Robert Diebold was born in the USA and moved to Ireland in 1972.

Michael Doherty was born in Derry. Initially opting to focus on the violin, he received frequent training from members of the Brodsky and Medici String Quartets.

Christy Doran was born in Dublin and has lived in Lucerne, Switzerland since his childhood. His father was an Irish ballad singer.
