The six members of Slagwerkgroep Den Haag (Percussion Group of The Hague) have 600 instruments and a repertoire that encompasses the entire literature of western percussion music. The five very diverse and distinctive works on this CD, among them Donnacha Dennehy’s ‘Composition for Percussion, Loops, Blips and Flesh’, were specially commissioned for the group in 2002-03.

Dennehy writes, “There is a whiff of high-class vandalism about my work” - a statement borne out by this disc, which includes his early, uproarious ‘Junk Box Fraud’ for two increasingly smutty vocalists and strident ensemble, ‘pAt’, for piano and taped "shipping forecast", and the recent lyrical violin concerto, ‘Elastic Harmonic’, with soloist Darragh Morgan, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Gavin Maloney.

The music on this recording is a voyage of discovery across the repertoire of the solo flute from the masterpieces of the Baroque to the explorations of our own time. The performances by William Dowdall, Ireland's leading exponent of the classical flute, capture every nuance of the music. His interpretations are characterized by dazzling technical brilliance allied to a profound musical understanding, resulting in a landmark recording for the solo flute.

Grá agus Bás is the label debut from Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy featuring two works performed by the Dublin-based Crash Ensemble, conducted by Alan Pierson. The title track, which translates as ‘love and death’, is inspired by sean-nós or ‘old style’ Irish vocal music, the vocals performed by Irish singer Iarla Ó Lionáird. Soloist, Dawn Upshaw features on the song cycle That the Night Come, six settings of poems by W.B. Yeats.
