This work is based on the opening motif, a 'take' from Messiaen (D flat-C flat-B flat), hence the 'French' in the title. The fact that it is 'kind of blues-y' accounts for the second part of the title.

These five short ‘postcards from Sicily’ were written at the request of the German pianist, Gertrud Firnkees. ‘Following a holiday in Taormina’, the composer writes, ‘I attempted to capture some of the warmth and colour of Sicily in musical miniatures.
‘Forgotten Worlds’, the composer writes, ‘was originally written in a version for speaker, flute, cello and piano as part of a set using texts by the Galway-based poet, Moya Cannon.
