Softday

Working as Softday, the multimedia collaboration of Taylor and Fernström took data from the ESB Fisheries Management Project on the river Shannon and converted it into digital information simulating the behaviour of salmon. The Irish Chamber Orchestra, among others, were involved in the recording.

Bill Whelan’s first major orchestral composition, ‘The Seville Suite’, was composed in 1992. Through music, the work tells the historical story of the legendary Red Hugh O'Donnell after his defeat at the Battle of Kinsale and his journey to La Coruna in Spain.

Blian le Báisteach

Visual artist Seán Taylor and computer software designer Mikael Fernström work collaboratively under the name Softday. ‘Blian le Báisteach’ (‘A year with rain’) is a computer-generated composition developed in conjunction with the Irish Chamber Orchestra in which rainfall data was converted into music using complex multimedia technology.

A reissue of a selection of some of A. J. Potter’s best traditional arrangements recorded by the RTÉ Light Orchestra in the 1970s. The orchestra was, musically, his first love and these pieces display an extraordinary sense of instrumental colour.

Flautist Aisling Agnew and classical guitarist Matthew McAllister met in Glasgow whilst studying at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Their joint passion for chamber music, interacting with composers and performing new music immediately brought them together. Their debut album, ‘Recital’, features a wide range of virtuosic and beautiful music from Greg Caffrey, David Fennessy and others.

Middle Kingdom is a reflective process of compositional techniques scored for solo violin and piano. The cycle is linked by five countries and draws upon Medieval England, the Hebrew scriptures, the vast expanse of the Arabian desert, Israel, Celtic Ireland, Arthurian legends and Welsh magic.

Donnacha Dennehy: Elastic Harmonic

Dennehy writes, “There is a whiff of high-class vandalism about my work” - a statement borne out by this disc, which includes his early, uproarious ‘Junk Box Fraud’ for two increasingly smutty vocalists and strident ensemble, ‘pAt’, for piano and taped "shipping forecast", and the recent lyrical violin concerto, ‘Elastic Harmonic’, with soloist Darragh Morgan, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Gavin Maloney.
