Olivier Messiaen: Quartet for the End of Time
and the world première performances of four new solo works for violin, cello, clarinet and piano by Cenk Ergün, Amanda Feery, Gráinne Mulvey and Jonathan Nangle.
Composer Olivier Messiaen wrote his evocative Quartet for the End of Time while a prisoner-of-war at the Stalag VIIIA camp in Gorlitz, Germany. This seminal work, first performed on a brutally cold January night in 1941 in the camp by Messiaen and other internees, will be performed by and ensemble of exceptional musicians from home and abroad in the site-specific setting of Kilmainham Gaol’s East Wing. Taking their inspiration from the Gaol’s rich history and iconic surroundings, four new works, commissioned by DICMF with funds from The Arts Council, will be performed alongside Messiaen’s master oeuvre.
Presented in partnership with the Office of Public Works and Kilmainham Gaol Museum.
