The Speed of Dark cover

The Speed of Dark

John Wolf Brennan is a household name in Leo Records' catalogue. Although this album has been billed as "solopiano" the best description would be "nonsolopiano", for John plays Steinway piano, Yamaha, prepared piano, arcopiano, pizzicatopiano, sordinopiano, tamburopiano, framepiano, Indian harmonium, Irish whistle, Hohner accordion & melodica. Considering his enormous and varied output, John Wolf Brennan has already been called "the very epitome of the 21st century musician".

XXX_LIVE_NUDE_GIRLS!!! cover

XXX_LIVE_NUDE_GIRLS!!!

Jennifer Walshe

XXX_LIVE_NUDE_GIRLS!!! is a music theatre piece in the marionette opera tradition. In this case, the marionettes are fashion dolls of the Barbie or Sindy type and their “theatre” is a large doll house. ‘It is a powerful piece, driven by the discrepancy between the shiny, fashionable world of Barbie and the grainy reality of Walshe's music.(...)’ - Christopher Fox - the Guardian.

Una Santa Oscura cover

Una Santa Oscura

Ian Wilson

Ian Wilson’s ‘Una Santa Oscura’ (’an obscure saint’) is inspired by Hildegard of Bingen, a German abbess, mystic and composer. The music is partly ritualistic and meditative in nature, structured to reflect a ‘cloistered’ day. An electronically-generated tape part plays almost continuously, and much of its basis is one of Hildegard’s compositions, ‘Ave Maria, O auctrix vite’, which is heard at the very end of the work. The work is performed by Ioana Petcu-Colan.

Islands : Contemporary Irish Solo and Ensemble Works for Guitar cover

Islands : Contemporary Irish Solo and Ensemble Works for Guitar

Islands, the title of this recording, is taken from Seóirse Bodley's work for guitar. However, it also reflects that the CD comprises a set of disparate and varied works, recorded at different times and in different venues on a variety of instruments. The collection encompasses a wide variety of compositional styles and approaches to writing for the guitar and offers a good overview of the contribution to this genre by Irish composers. The seven works presented are all world premiere recordings.

Dubh cover

Dubh

A work of dark, gothic beauty, “Dubh” presents seven tracks by seven Irish composers: Linda Buckley, Judith Ring, Enda Bates, Peter Moran, Scott McLaughlin, Garrett Sholdice and Benedict Schlepper-Connolly. The CD features Amsterdam-based new music group, Trio Scordatura who create spaces both of astonishing intimacy and subtlety, and almost terrifying, textured expansiveness.
