CMC Library Update for January and February 2015

This update from the library features some of the works added to its collection during the first two months of 2015. In January and February, works from 20 different composers were added to the CMC online library catalogue. Selected works include:

Gerald Barry (1952-) Crossing the Bar
Commissioned by BCMG.
Premiered by Rebecca von Lipinski (S-solo) and Malcolm Wilson (pf) on 24 February 2015 at the Wigmore Hall, London.
This work is a setting of the Tennyson poem, translated by Werner von Koppenfels.

Séamas de Barra (1945-) Íosagán: Suantraí Nollag
Premiered by the Choir of Laurel Hill College Limerick, conductor Orla Colgan Ahern on 1 May 2014 at the Sixtieth Cork International Choral Festival, City Hall, Cork.
This work is a setting of the poem by Mícheál Ó Murchú, trans. de Barra
As ‘Tuaim Inbheir agus Dánta Eile’ (Baile Átha Cliath, 1923)

Jerome de Bromhead (1945-) A Lay for a Light Year
Premiered by RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, conductor Gavin Maloney on 3 February 2015 at the Horizons Series, National Concert Hall, Dublin.
“It is a short tone poem intended to express feelings about what we see far away, and therefore, long ago. It is comprised of mainly broad gestures, set in a slightly nebulous harmonic flux on the edge of tonality.”

David Bremner (1952-) Logical Fallacies
Commissioned by Limerick City of Culture 2014 (a Made in Limerick project).
Premiered by Elizabeth Hilliard (S-solo) and Andreea Banciu (va) on 26 September 2014 at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick.
This is a song-cycle of poetry by Billy Mills.

Philip Hammond (1945-) Piano Concerto
Commissioned by BBC Radio 3.
Premiered by Michael McHale (pf) and the Ulster Orchestra, conductor Nicolas Collon on 5 January 2015 at the Ulster Hall, Belfast.
"The Piano Concerto was written with great affection for Michael McHale and dedicated to my fellow resident at CCI in Paris, writer and novelist, Mary Costello."

Ruaidhri Mannion (1985-) Occupy (the pianos)
Commissioned by Association du Concours Nicati.
Premiered by Francoise-Green Piano Duo on 14 September 2012 at the Biennale Bern Festival, Konservatorium Bern, Switzerland.

Jane O’Leary (1946-) A Winter Sketchbook
Premiered by Concorde on 25 January 2015 at Concorde: Up Close with Music, RHA Gallery, Dublin.
“As if sketched in sound, they are full of colour and sharp contrasts, leaving the listener to conjure up his/her own individual images. A memory of the very sharp bright light from a low winter sun, bare branches against a grey sky – these are some of the images that may surface as the music unfolds.”
