CMC Library Talks: Spotlighting Works by Women Composers

1 October 2025 18:00

Contemporary Music Centre

CMC Scholar-in-Residence Laura Sheils highlights recent works by Irish women composers, with themes from mental health to love and grief.

In this talk, Laura will explore some of the exciting choral repertoire by women composers active in New Music in Ireland, such as Norah Walsh’s uplifting Out from Under the Overwhelm and Anne-Marie O’Farrell’s lively Praise the Lord of Love. This presentation and listening session will delve into recent compositions for mixed and upper voices, which cover a diverse range of themes and texts, from mental health to love and grief.

Laura Sheils is a PhD researcher, choral composer, and music educator based in Dublin. Her doctoral research focuses on the choral works of contemporary Irish composers Rhona Clarke and Eoghan Desmond, analysing their approaches to text setting and their respective compositional styles. As part of her CMC residency, Laura is presenting a series of free public talks on Irish contemporary choral music and contributes regularly to the Library’s online feature Through the Digital Door. Laura is also currently curating a new catalogue of Irish choral music drawn from CMC’s archive, with the aim of encouraging access and engagement with choral works by Irish composers.
