CMC Library Talks: Winter & Festive Highlights

5 November 2025 18:00

Contemporary Music Centre

CMC Scholar-in-Residence Laura Sheils presents a curated selection of festive songs & winter-themed works for the Christmas season ahead.

As we approach the festive season, this talk will centre on Christmas carols and winter-themed texts by Irish composers such as Rhona Clarke, Seán Doherty, and Eoin Mulvany. Laura will discuss the variety of ways in which these composers reimagine ancient texts and Medieval carols for a contemporary audience, spotlighting specific compositional techniques, illustrated with score and audio examples.

Laura Sheils is a PhD researcher, choral composer, and music educator based in Dublin. Her doctoral research focuses on the choral works of contemporary Irish composers Rhona Clarke and Eoghan Desmond, analysing their approaches to text setting and their respective compositional styles. As part of her CMC residency, Laura is presenting a series of free public talks on Irish contemporary choral music and contributes regularly to the Library’s online feature Through the Digital Door. Laura is also currently curating a new catalogue of Irish choral music drawn from CMC’s archive, with the aim of encouraging access and engagement with choral works by Irish composers.
