Sparky Conversations #12: The Body Making Music with Jenn Kirby
Sparky Conversations #12 - The Body Making Music: body-led explorations in composition and performance with Jenn Kirby
Bodies are connected and shaped by the objects and instruments with which we interact. Acoustic instruments have traditionally led this shaping, with bodies adapting to instrument properties. Electronic instruments do not have the same physical restrictions and can offer different possibilities for physical engagement and body-led approaches to composition and performance. In this talk, Jenn will discuss her approaches to body-led composition and performance and how working with movement sensors and controllers in electronic music also informs her instrumental composition work.
Jenn Kirby is a composer, performer and music technologist, who writes instrumental composition, electroacoustic music and live electronics. Jenn makes hybrid instruments with software, sensors and re-purposed controllers capturing body movement for live electronic music. Her work has been described as “digital surrealism”, “intoxicatingly strange” and having a “sense of adventure and experimentalism”. At the centre of Jenn’s work is a curiosity for sound, body, and connection, often forming through the fracturing of sound, movement, and the exposure of process.
