Kirkos 10th Anniversary: Concert 1 featuring music by Jonathan Nangle & Kevin O'Connell

30 July 2022 18:00

Unit 44 (Kirkos Ensemble)

Jonathan Nangle's Particle (2008) was first performed at a Kirkos event in 2012 while many of the ensemble were still students at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Kevin O'Connell's Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano was commissioned by Kirkos and first performed in 2017 during the Kirkoskammer series. Judith Shatin's Zipper Music will be given its world premiere in its quartet version followed by a new commission and another world premiere of Éna Brennan's Ode to Laura Palmer.

Programme

Jonathan NangleParticle (Clarinet, Electronics)

Inspired by an article by the science writer Oliver Sacks called Greetings from the Island of Stability, the piece is a short history of the Periodic Table following the announcement in February 2004 of the discovery of two new elements, 113 and 115.

Kevin O'Connell Horn Trio (Horn, Violin, Piano)

One movement lasting about 10 minutes. The listener will be aware of several distinct sections: a rhythmically free opening featuring long lines for the horn, a scherzo-like central section, and a longcoda which effectively is a movement by itself. Central to the work is the sound of the horn.

Judith Shatin - Zipper Music [World Premiere of Quartet Version]

Part of Shatin's Quotidian Series (inspired by the rich sonic tapestry of our daily world), Zipper Music explores the endless sonic possibilities of a quartet of jacket zippers.

Éna Brennan - Ode To Laura Palmer (Full Ensemble, Video) [World Premiere]

Éna Brennan’s Ode to Laura Palmer, is a queasy, Twin Peaksy piece for video and ensemble
