The 2014 edition of Waterford New Music Week takes place from 18–23 March
Now in its 16th year, Waterford New Music Week is an annual festival presented by the Department of Performing & Creative Arts, School of Humanities, Waterford Institute of Technology and Garter Lane Arts Centre. Funded by the Arts Council and Waterford City Council, the festival celebrates and promotes contemporary music in formal and informal settings.
The festival features a range of concerts, workshops and events taking place in a variety of venues throughout Waterford city during the week. These include clarinettist Paul Roe and flautist William Dowdall performing a programme of music by Irish composers on 18 March at 1.15pm; the screening of the film The Woman who married Clarke Gable which features music by Irish composer John Buckley on 19 March; a workshop on composing for film by singer/songwriter Dawn Kenny, and a performance of works by Ian Wilson and Brian Byrne by The Chatham Saxophone Quartet on 20 March.
CMC will bring its annual New Music Marathon to the festival on 21 March. The event, which takes place at WIT, College Street Campus, Chapel from 11.00–17.30, is a showcase for student composers and will include composition and performance students from third level music and music technology departments across the island performing their work.
Also featured will be a talk on 21 March by composer Eric Sweeney and Mark Roper on their forthcoming opera, The Invader, which will be premiered in May 2014 as part of the Waterford 1100 celebrations. Sweeney’s music is part of the closing event on 23 March at Christ Church Cathedral, with the composer conducting a performance of his St Partrick’s Mass by the Choir Christ Church Cathedral and students of WIT.
