'Three Words for Light' Anselm McDonnell & Martin Johnson at Seamus Heaney HomePlace, programme includes world premiere of a work by Judith Ring

17 February 2022 20:00

The Helicon

With Anselm McDonnell and Martin Johnson.

This programme is centred on a new work for cello and electronics, Three Words for Light, written by composer/guitarist Anselm McDonnell in collaboration with Martin Johnson. Inspired by Irish phrases for light in writer and journalist Manchán Magan's book Thirty-Two Words for Field: Lost Words of the Irish Landscape, the piece explores different manifestations of light: will-o'-the-wisps, forked lightning, and the gradual softening of the sky just before sunrise.

These images inform the musical materials present in the work and together constitute a journey from the depths of night, with its eerie, ghostly lights, to the more hopeful cusp of dawn. Join us for a beautiful musical experience, to lift the spirit and travel into the light.
