Explore Contemporary Irish Choral Music with CMC Scholar in Residence Laura Sheils

The Contemporary Music Centre is delighted to announce a series of free public talks on Irish Choral Music presented by Scholar-in-Residence Laura Sheils.

Laura Sheils is a PhD researcher, choral composer, and music educator based in Dublin. Her doctoral research focuses on the choral works of contemporary Irish composers Rhona Clarke and Eoghan Desmond, analysing their approaches to text setting and their respective compositional styles. As part of her CMC residency, Laura has presented a public talk on Irish contemporary choral music inspired by the natural world, and is a regular contributor to the Library’s online feature Through the Digital Door. Laura is also currently curating a new catalogue of Irish choral music drawn from CMC’s archive, with the aim of encouraging access and engagement with choral works by Irish composers.

In this programme of talks, Laura will spotlight compositional techniques, stylistic and thematic developments, as well as considerations for performers, illustrated with examples from CMC’s collection. This is an excellent opportunity to explore and engage with contemporary choral music from Ireland, and to find new repertoire for your singing group.

All talks are free and take place at the CMC Library on 19 Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, Dublin. As space in the library is limited, we ask that you please book in advance to secure your place.
