Pianist Deborah Armstrong is giving a Fleischmann Centenary Concert in New York on 12 May.
This special program marks the centenary of composer, conductor, musicologist and educator Aloys Fleischmann who played a significant role in the development of Irish music.
In addition to Fleischmann's Suite for Piano (1933), the concert features a variety of 20th century Irish compositions including Annie Patterson's earlier and rarely performed Ivernia as well as works by Eibhlís Farrell, Philip Martin, Ian Wilson, John Field and Victor Lazzarini.
The concert takes place in the prestigious Fifth Avenue home of the American Irish Historical Society. Founded in 1897, the AIHS is an international center of scholarship, education and cultural enrichment dedicated to promoting the significant, on-going contributions to the United States of America made by Irish immigrants and their descendants. A center of the contemporary American Irish experience, the organization sponsors public programs to explore current issues and celebrates the renaissance in Irish culture from its weekly lectures, visual art exhibits and concerts. The Society has been, from its inception, both non-partisan and non-sectarian.
