Bernard Geary (1934 - 2023)

Composer Bernard Geary passed away peacefully at St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin on the 22nd of April 2023 at the age of 89. His funeral ceremony took place at St Joseph's Church in Glasthule, Dublin on the 27th of April.

Born in Cork in 1934, Geary had lived in Dublin since 1970 working as a composer, teacher and pianist. His compositions, spanning orchestral, choral, chamber and instrumental works, have been performed and broadcast throughout Ireland and in Europe. In 1997 a concert of his works was held at the National Concert Hall, Dublin, while in 2000 a CD of his piano and choral works was released. In 2018, Geary's 'In Praise of a City', a celebration of Cork, was performed at the opening gala concert of the Cork International Choral Festival, alongside music by Geary's Professor at University College Cork, Aloys Fleischmann. Bernard Geary served on the founding board of the Contemporary Music Centre, which was established in 1985, and acted as chairman in the early years of the organisation.
