October premieres of works by Ian Wilson at home and abroad.
Those who enjoy Ian Wilson's music will have a busy month attending premieres of three new works. On Friday 14th October the Cappa Ensemble will premiere Noct for piano quartet, Wilson's first piano quartet, in the Methodist Church, Sligo. This 12-minute work, inspired by the night sky and the idea of darkness, was commissioned by Music Network for the group, who will give a second performance the following evening in Anaverna House, Dundalk.
On Sunday 16th October in Ballintubber Abbey, Mayo, the official première of Wilson's 13th quartet, Still life in green and red (for string quartet and soundtrack), will be given by the ConTempo Quartet. This is a 40-minute work resulting from a one-year public art residency in the county and is based on/inspired by a number of interviews made with local people, including churchmen, teachers, union reps, doctors, schoolchildren and artists. A promotional CD of the work will be made available (free of charge) through Mayo County Council Arts Office next spring in time for an outdoor performance at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar, in April.
On Friday 21st October the British new music ensemble Psappha will give the world premiere of Dreamgarden for mezzo-soprano, flute, oboe, piano, violin, viola and cello at the Cosmo Rodewold Concert Hall, University of Manchester (http://psappha.com/diary.aspx ). This 4-movement, 25-minute work was inspired by different kinds of dreams common to us all (dreams of flying, nightmares, dreams of sadness).
