Sea-Sounds a multimedia concert featuring the German premiere of Watershed by CMC Composer Ailís Ní Ríain.
Watershed is a song cycle composed in 2020 by the award-winning Irish composer Ailís Ní Ríain, performed by Julie Comparini (contralto) and Yonit Kosovske (piano) and made possible by an Ireland Arts Council Music Commissions Award. The 25-minute work sets poems from the book And Say (Revival Press, 2019) by Jessica Brown. Central to all the texts in the collection are themes informed by the writer’s personal interaction with nature around bodies of water in the west of Ireland: the canals of Killaloe in County Clare, the hills of Moylussa and Tountinna overlooking Lough Derg, the cliffs of the Burren, and the beach in Fanore.
The German premiere of Watershed will take place in a multimedia concert entitled Sea-Sounds on June 22, 2023 in the Kulturkirche St. Stephani in Bremen, followed by a second performance on June 25 in the Stadtkirche Bremen-Vegesack as part of the LUX Festival. Sea-Sounds combines Watershed with the 1899 song cycle Sea Pictures by Sir Edward Elgar, as well as readings of Jessica Brown’s poetry by herself and in specially-commissioned German translations by Schirin Nowrousian. German artist Sara Förster will illuminate the concerts with a live-projection light installation that utilises liquids, glass, objects and mobiles and is uniquely tailored to each performance space.
