The Blurry Clock - An audio countdown to the reopening of the LGA on Monday June 29th 2020… and beyond

Eoin Callery, Craig Cox, Danny Deepo, Alan Dormer, Oscar Mascareñas, Kevin McNally, Mel Mercier, Jeremy Morgan, and Clare Sands.

A single audio transducer is mounted onto the top of the black drainpipe to the right of the front entrance to the LGA building. This transducer plays a variety of sound files to mark each hour, half-hour, and quarter-hour, from 11AM-6PM every day, during the week preceding the reopening. The transducer turns the drainpipe into a kind of speaker that filters the sounds one hears.
The title refers to a Gaussian Blur, a type of filtering that is often used in digital photography to reduce or smooth certain details of images. In sound, an analogous process can occur when a sound is played into a room, or in this case through an object. We might think of this process as something of a sonic flattening of the curve!
The sounds for this work were created by the staff and students of the MA in Composition and Creative Music Practice and the PhD in Arts Practice at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in UL:
