Musical Tales 2018

Lunchtime Concert - Central Library, Ilac Centre

Musical Tales Programme:  Contemporary Music Centre’s Musical Tales programme is built around the featured book for One City One Book 2018, Sinéad Gleeson’s collection of short stories The Long Gaze Back. The book presents a chronological view of the genre from the work of Maria Edgeworth at the beginning of the nineteenth century to the work of a range of today’s leading writers. The Musical Tales programme for 2018, will mirror the chronological survey of the featured book, presenting works ranging from the songs of Ina Boyle born in 1889 almost 130 years ago, to some of today’s leading young composers from Ireland.

“It could be argued that the chamber music forms we hear in the concert in some way also mirror the structure of a short story. Some of the pieces present an entire world in miniature while others present us with a fleeting view of some larger experience which resonates beyond the boundaries of the actual piece. While some of the pieces are more abstract others deal with themes that are echoed in the stories chosen for the volume”, curator Dr. Mark Fitzgerald,  DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama.
