
Dr Matthew Rowan is a composer and lyricist from Belfast.
Matthew Rowan (PhD, 2009) is a Northern Irish composer and lyricist, renowned for his distinctive voice in contemporary music that seamlessly combines classical and popular music traditions. He has received numerous awards and commissions, including support from the AHRC, UKRI, and the Catherine Cookson Foundation. His music was featured in the multimedia exhibitions Graphic Cities and Resonance-Sadaa, and he submitted winning entries to the John Armitage Memorial, Red Note Ensemble, Kate Halsall Maché, and Peter Rosser Composition Award competitions. His compositions have been performed internationally by acclaimed soloists, including Lina Andonovska, Yichen Cai, Mak Grgić, Christoph Jäggin, William Lane, Loré Lixenberg, Jacqueline Shave, and Georgios Tsakoumakis. Notable ensembles that have performed his works include Duodort, Hard Rain Soloist Ensemble, Katabatic Winds, Momenta Quartet (with Miranda Cuckson), Mr. McFall’s Chamber featuring Taylor Wilson, Northern Early Music Collective, Onyx Brass, and Royal Northern Sinfonia. A dedicated educator and editor, Matthew taught composition and performance at the International Centre for Music Studies for over a decade and served as music studies editor for the online journal E-pisteme. He is represented by the Contemporary Music Centre Ireland and is a member of PRS for Music
