David Armstrong was born in Essex, England, in 1927 and moved to Ireland at an early age. A self-taught musician who was particularly interested in applying drama to music, he trained as an opera producer for five years under George Foa.
He later went on to work as a television producer and director in Radio Telefís Éireann, Ireland’s national radio and TV station, producing many leading documentaries and films. He also produced and conducted several operas and musicals. His compositions were often written under the alias Bill Skinner.
