Same as it ever was?

A unique Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) and Community Arts project supported by the Meath Foundation has resulted in a unique CD. “Same as it ever was?” showcases the music and poetry resulting from a scheme inspired by Reminiscence Therapy that was run in schools in Tallaght and Cashel in conjunction with the hospital

The project explored the potential of sharing musical experiences between students and their grandparents to enhance intergenerational communication, understanding, and knowledge, and project co-leader, composer Ian Wilson, produced a musical composition that reflects the commonality and differences of those musical choices and the themes that arose from them. Late last year the generations involved in the project were brought together in Mount Seskin Community School Tallaght and Cashel Community School Tipperary. The CD contains five songs by Ian Wilson, settings of poems by Helen Pizzey which were a direct response to the outcomes of the project.

vlz - very low impedance

Victor Lazzarini

This album is, from many perspectives, a new departure for Victor Lazzarini. With it, he has rediscovered some of the music he has appreciated since his youth. It also marks a return to performance. As a pianist, synthesist, and keyboard player, he has played every single part that was recorded for each track of this collection. This allowed him to work through new compositions from an improvisation point of view, which is a practice he had not used for a long time. The title of the album somehow reflects this, as Lazzarini found a way of doing things that seemed to offer very low impedance in a metaphoric sense. "vlz" is inspired by the jazz fusion and progressive rock of the 1970s. It represents both a commentary and an homage to the aesthetics of these musics, which had a strong influence in Lazzarini's musical upbringing.

Orpheus Down

Ian Wilson

Composer Ian Wilson has long been fascinated by the story of Orpheus’ journey to the Underworld to bring his lover Eurydice back from the dead. When bass clarinettist Gareth Davis and double-bassist Dario Calderone suggested to Wilson that he compose a large-scale duo for their low instruments he immediately thought of using the myth, with its accompanying themes of deep and dark, as inspiration. The resulting work Orpheus Down (2021) consists of ten movements, each relating to a specific part of Orpheus’ journey. The CD features detailed liner notes by Ian Wilson alongside images by photographer Doreen Kennedy. The project was supported by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealíon.
