Kate Ellis and David Bremner perform as part of the Irish Canon series in June
The second season of the Irish Canon concert series draws to a close with two concerts in June, in Cork and Dublin.
The series, run by the Association of Irish Composers, sees multiple performances of programmes of contemporary Irish music selected by the performers, in venues across the country. Its two seasons has seen nearly 20 performances, with more planned for later in 2014.
David Bremner will perform his programme of solo organ music for the third time as part of the series, this time on the newly restored instrument at St. Fin Barre's Cathedral in Cork, 7pm, 14 June. The programme features works by Grainne Mulvey, John McLachlan, Anna Murray, David Bremner, Ryan Molloy, Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, Ben McHugh, Jonathan Nangle, Donnacha Dennehy and Derek Ball.
"The programme is a mix of contemporary Irish organ 'standards' and pieces written for me over the last few years. It was chosen to exhibit the diversity of contemporary Irish approaches to the instrument. One thing that interests me is that in many of these works there is an response to the contrapuntal heritage of the organ; however it is often manifested in the use of certain contrapuntal techniques that composers of the past were clearly fascinated by, but which have been overlooked in the official histories." -David Bremner
Each performer in the series will perform their programmes at the National Concert Hall's Kevin Barry Room once in the series: the 19 June will see Kate Ellis perform her programme of solo cello music there. With works by Laura Sheeran, Linda Buckley, Adrian Hart, Judith Ring and the premiere of Enda Bates' Apophony.
Kate Ellis says of her programme choice: "Each work is a snapshot of the composer and their musical and thought processes. All of the works are written by musicians who are also performing regularly in many different guises. I think this gives them each a very clear and strong perspective on what they want to hear and have translated by me."
Tickets to both concerts cost €12 or €8 (students), with tickets for David Bremner available at the door, and for Kate Ellis at the National Concert Hall Box Office at www.nch.ie or 01 4170000. For more information on the Irish Canon or the Association of Irish Composers, see www.composers.ie
