CMC Library Update for April 2014

This monthly update from CMC’s library features some of the works added to its collection during the previous month. With over 170 active composers who regularly send in copies of scores and recordings, CMC’s library is continually updated to ensure that it is as complete and comprehensive as possible.

During April, works from 16 different composers were added to the CMC online library catalogue. These include works from the whole spectrum of categories: solo instrumental, ensemble, electro-acoustic, vocal, choral and orchestral works. Selected works include:

Donnacha Dennehy (1970-) The Hunger (Sections I-V) (2012–13)
for voice, large ensemble and tape
Partially commissioned by Alarm Will Sound with funding provided by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
Premiered by Dawn Upshaw and Alarm Will Sound on 6 April 2013 at Carnegie Hall.

Eibhlis Farrell (1953-) Dancing at the Crossroads (2013)
for wind ensemble
Commissioned by Ray James and Baker University Symphonic Winds.
Premiered by Baker University Symphonic Winds with conductor Ray James on 4 May 2014 at Baker University Rice Auditorium, Baldwin City, Kansas, USA.

Piers Hellawell (1956-) Atria (2013)
for cello and piano
Commissioned by Belfast Music Society.
Premiered by Paul Watkins (vc) and Huw Watkins (pf) on 21 February 2013 at the BMS International Chamber Music Festival, Belfast.

Victor Lazzarini (1969-) Peeglid (2014)
for chamber ensemble and computer
Premiered by Resonabilis on 29 April 2014 at Kumu Arts Museum, Tallinn, Estonia.

Scott McLaughlin (1975-) a metastable harmony (2012)
for string quartet
Premiered by Quatuor Bozzini on 24 November 2012 at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

Sam Perkin (1985-) Motor Cortex (2013)
for chamber ensemble
Premiered by Julien Pellegrini (vib), Anna Astesano (hrp), Jacques Perez (va) and Hansi Mechling (vc) on 3 December 2013 at Salle Varese, Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique de Lyon, France.

‘In this energetic work, these ideas are explored from different perspectives involving the fundamental areas of music: pitch, duration, harmony, rhythm, line, dynamic, register, timbre, texture, pulse and proportion.’ Sam Perkin

Ian Wilson (1964-) Shī Shì shí shī shǐ (2013)
for voice and chamber ensemble
Premiered by Eunoia Quintet on 6 May 2014 at Gare du Nord, Basel, Switzerland.

A setting of a modern poem written in Classical Chinese by Yuen Ren Chao (1892–1982), in which every syllable has the sound shi (in different tones) when read in modern Mandarin Chinese.
