New Irish Choral music at the Cork International Choral Festival
The Cork International Choral Festival (CICF) takes place from 30 April - 4 May and features a number of new music related events.
The long-running Seminar on New Choral Music takes place on 2 May from 2–4pm at the CIT Cork School of Music and will include analysis and discussion on two new works by Irish composers: Letter to Michael by David Fennessy, a joint commission between the CICF and Chamber Choir Ireland, and Solomon Grundy by 2014 Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition winner Donal Mac Erlaine. The seminar will be chaired by composer Rhona Clarke.
Both works will be premiered later in the day at 7.30pm in St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral by CICF choir-in-residence Chamber Choir Ireland with conductor Paul Hillier in a programme which includes works by David Lang, John Tavener, Malcolm Williamson and Michael Gordon.
The Seminar on New Choral Music is the subject of a talk by Coral O’Sullivan on 2 May at 4.15pm in the CIT Cork School of Music entitled From Archer to Zuk – Fifty years of the Cork International Choral Festival Seminars. An exhibition displaying the Cork City Library Archive of the seminar compositions also takes place from 2–3 May during the seminars.
Also in CIT Cork School of Music on 3 May from 10–12pm is a performance reading and discussion by Chamber Choir Ireland of selected scores from two of the entrants to the 2014 Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition, Seán Doherty and Sam Perkin.
