AIC/ICC Project Evolution Concerts

John McLachlan, one of the mentor composers

This January will see the culmination of a year-long project between members of the Association of Irish Composers and the Irish Composers Collective with three concerts. Project Evolution involved six 'emerging' young composers from the ICC paired with established experienced composer members of the AIC, who guided them through the composition of a new work for ensemble.

The goal behind Project Evolution is twofold: to provide an opportunity for young composers to gain practical advice and learn from more experienced composers, and to bring the process of composition to the fore. Project Evolution aims to demystify music-writing by bringing its practical considerations in front of an audience, through blog posts and reports and through talks from mentor and mentee composers.

The  mentored composers and mentors are Patrick Connolly and Peter Moran; Anna Murray and Benjamin Dwyer; Jenn Kirby and Karen Power; Ryan Molloy and John McLachlan; and Sean Doherty and Kevin O'Connoll.

In each of the three concerts will be works by four composers, a total of ten world premieres by mentors and mentees, with programmes augmented by works chosen by the performers. The performers include Susan Doyle (flutes), Paul Row (clarinets), Ryan Molloy (piano), Roddy O'Keeffe (trombone), Richard O'Doneell (percussion) and Adrian Mantu (cello), arranged in three different line-ups of four players. Each concert takes place at the Hugh Lane Gallery as part of their Sundays@Noon series.
