A new work by Ailís Ní Ríain will be premiered at the Dublin FringeFest

The work, Sklonište, is a music and video piece about the siege of Sarajevo and receives three performances in Dublin as part of the FringeFest on 11 and 12 September.

The work combines new music for solo accordion (performed by Irish accordionist Dermot Dunne) with video, photography, documentary and storytelling.

Ailís Ní Ríain:

"Sarajevo, 1994. The city is under siege. Sniper fire kills civilians every day. The citizens of Sarajevo run to avoid being shot. They all run for one thing: shelter. Sklonište (shelter) was spray-painted throughout Sarajevo to guide its citizens to underground shelters. The siege lasted 1,425 days - a long time to have to run for your life."

The work also features images from Sarajevo-based Jim Marshall, and is described by the composer as “an alternative reflection on the longest siege in modern warfare.”
