Interview with Elaine Agnew, RTÉ lyric fm's Composer-in-Residence

RTÉ lyric FM Composer in Residence: Elaine Agnew

RTÉ lyric fm's composer-in-residence Elaine Agnew talks about her year-long residency, and her commission for the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Make a Wish, composed as part of the residency for RTÉ lyric fm's 10th anniversary concert on 3 May 2009.

Elaine Agnew was appointed the first composer-in-residence to RTÉ lyric fm in May 2008. The residency, which is run in association with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, was set up to allow the national music and arts station to build a relationship with someone who would not only write new music for broadcast, but also contribute to the station's programming, education and outreach activities and web site in the form of podcasts, a blog and other online events.

Her commission for the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Make a Wish, is performed at the 10th anniversary celebrations of RTÉ lyric fm in the University Concert Hall, Limerick on 3 May.

Other works completed by Agnew during the year are Hiccup, for two baroque violins, violone and harpsichord, composed as the station's contribution to the European Broadcasting Union's project, Handel in New Clothes. Her second work, Curoo Curoo for amateur choir, was part of RTÉ lyric fm's Choir for Christmas competition, and choirs around the country rehearsed and recorded the piece as part of the competition in December 2008.
