The Passion of Joan of Arc, a silent film featuring a live score by Irene Buckley, is presented in London on 17 July

Directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, starring Renée Falconetti, Eugene Sylvain, André Berley, Antonin Artaud, this silent masterpiece from 1928 is presented at Union Chapel on 17 July at 8.45pm, with doors open from 7pm. The screening follows sellout screenings at the Glasgow and Cork Film Festivals

The film tells the story of Joan of Arc and, thanks to its stunning camerawork and striking compositions, is regarded as a masterpiece in early film-making. The film was long thought to have been lost to fire but the original version was found in perfect condition in 1981 in a Norwegian mental institution.

Cork-born composer Irene Buckley’s score uses the text and structure of the Requiem Mass, creating a work for soprano, organ and electronics. The score will be performed live alongside the film by soprano Emma Nash, organist James McVinnie, with the composer on electronics.
