Concorde's Up Close with Music series continues in March with a new piece from Frank Lyons
Concorde continue their second season of contemporary music series Up Close with Music at the RHA Gallery with a series of short concerts on 24 March.
The afternoon event includes two programmes at 2.30 and 3.45pm, both of which feature a new commission from Derry-based Frank Lyons for bass clarinet and accordion. The piece Thud is described by the composer as having 'understated lyricism with occasional emotive bursts of virtuosic activity.'
Also on the programme is Riikka Talvitie's 2004 piece Bit by Bit, Karen Tanaka's Nightbird, Dutch composer Gerard Beljon's Bird and Anna Veismane's Hidden Dragons - one of two pieces for cello and guitar by the Latvian composer which will be performed. Concorde will also be joined by two student postgraduate performers from DIT Conservatory: saxophonist Gavin Brennan and panpipe-player Iulian Pusca, who will perform with guitarist John Feely.
Each Up Close with Music event includes newly commissioned music from featured Irish composers alongside international repertoire and gives the audience a chance to meet those composers and performers. The series is supported by a Music Project Award from the Arts Council. Admission is free but there is limited seating. The series continues on 28 April.
