CMC - Culture Night - happening - live at our place call for works

The Contemporary Music Centre presents happening - live at our place showcasing Irish works across a wide range of styles and media as part of Culture Night on Friday, 21 September.

This year, CMC has invited composer Karen Power to curate its Culture Night ‘happening’ - representing and celebrating the diversity which helps define our Irish Contemporary Musical Culture. This 5-hour musical feast will feature performances of solo and ensemble works by a host of Irish composers, live electronic sets performed by the composers themselves, electroacoustic pieces, and video works. The CMC building itself will become one large performing space as sounds, which emerge from every room, collide and reshape to make new sounds.

CMC is calling for works in two categories, which will be considered for performance at the happening on Culture Night on Friday, 21 September 2012.

1. Collaborative sound and visual works open to any of the following combinations:

  • Still or Moving Image and Pre-Recorded Sound (DVD format)
  • Improvised image and sound (vj with live electronics etc)
  • Still or Moving Image with live sound [1]

All style and genres will be considered.

Duration: maximum 15 minutes, no minimum.

2. Improvised, text-based or graphic scored works for 4 instruments.

The Instrumentation should be for 4 musicians. Its instrumentation can be open, or restricted to Bb/Bass Clarinets/Saxophones (NB ask for details for saxophone), Cello, E.Guitar with effects boards and Double Bass. Works can be with or without an electronic component.

The performing ensemble is Quiet Music Ensemble. QME is specifically dedicated to Experimental music and improvisation (with the unique approach to performance this music dictates). Like other specialised ensembles (e.g. the Bang On A Can All-Stars), the group comes ‘parceled’ with musical expectations and ideals. Typically, the music is extremely pared-down, (partially) improvised, quiet, and with a heavy emphasis on explorations of sonority. The ensemble’s music is meditative, often serene and definitely unhurried. Some of its music is for mobile musicians and/or audience. Please visit the ensemble’s website for more information about the group (www.quietmusicensemble.com) or email jgqme@mac.com with any specific QME queries.

There is no restriction on the duration of works.
