Walled City Music Festival

Matthew Schellhorn

New Irish music plays an important part in this year’s Walled City Music Festival which takes place in Derry from 27 July to 4 August.

In addition to several concerts focusing exclusively on Irish composers, Composer-in-Residence Linda Buckley will lead composition masterclasses and workshops over the course of the festival.

On 31 July the Hu-Slotkin Duo (Sabrina Hu, flute, and Matthew Slotkin, guitar) will perform works and premieres by Frank Lyons, Linda Buckley, Ian Wilson, Greg Caffrey, and Jane O’Leary.

Matthew Schellhorn’s solo piano recital on 2 August will feature world premieres of pieces by Gráinne Mulvey and Nicola LeFanu, as well as works by Ian Wilson, Siobhán Cleary, Linda Buckley, Deirdre McKay and Jennifer Walshe.

The Contemporary Music Centre will be present at the festival and will host pre-concert panel discussions with composers and performers before the concerts on 31 July and 2 August, which take place in the First Derry Presbyterian Church on Magazine Street (next to the Diamond).
