Irish entries to the International Rostrum of Composers (IRC), Vienna 2011.
The International Rostrum of Composers (IRC) is organized by the International Music Council with the financial assistance of participating radio networks. It is an international forum of representatives of broadcasting organizations who come together for the purpose of exchanging and broadcasting contemporary art music. Currently, over 30 national radio networks participate in the Rostrum presenting some 60 works composed within the five years preceding the Rostrum. After the listening sessions, the assembly of delegates selects and recommends the most important works in two categories: general and "young composers". These and other works will be presented in concerts and broadcast after the Rostrum by the participating and other interested radio stations.
Works by Irish composers have been well received at the IRC over the last ten years. RTÉ lyric submits works annually and sends a delegate to the IRC. Among the recommended works in past years have been Raymond Deane's Ripieno (2000), Deirdre Gribbin's Empire States (2003) and Donnacha Dennehy's Crane (2010). Jonathan Nangle's work our headlights blew softly into the black, illuminating very little was also one of only two works recommended in the under 30 category in 2009.
IRC 2011, will be held next week from Tuesday June 7 until Friday June 10. Delegates, including RTÉ lyric fm's Bernard Clarke will gather in Vienna, Austria where the event will be hosted by ORF, Austrian Radio. The following works will be presented by RTÉ lyric fm at the IRC 2011 and were selected by an independent panel in April 2011:
General Composer category
Jonathan Nangle "Now Is Night Come Quietly
Judith Ring "Within An Egg Of Space"
Enda Bates "String Quartet No 1
Junior Composer Category (Under 30 years of age)
Sean Clancy "Irreversible"
All works presented at the IRC are made available by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to its wide network of members and associate members via satellite. These dissemination schemes ensure excellent international coverage for the composers.
