New volume of complete works for Solo Guitar by Dave Flynn
Frisbee Publications has recently published the first volume of the complete solo guitar works (1993-2005) of Dave Flynn. The compositions date from Flynn's earliest composition 'Elegy for Joan' (1993) to his 'Four Études for Five Fingers' (2005) which were recently performed by John Feeley at the 2010 Waltons Guitar Festival of Ireland.
Through these works it is possible to trace Flynn's compositional development. 'Homage Sonatina' (1993-2001) combines works written in homage to master guitar composers Leo Brouwer, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Andy Summers. 'Three Gymn O'Paddies' are Flynn's Gaelicised take on Erik Satie's famous 'Gymnopedies'. The 'Two Minimalist Pieces' reflect the influence of John Adams, Steve Reich and Philip Glass on Flynn's music around the year 2000. 'Rollercoaster' (1998), written before Flynn was exposed to minimalism, demonstrates why Flynn felt a kinship to the minimalist composers.
The juxtaposition of influences from traditional Irish music, modal jazz and modern classical composition in 'Four Etúdes for Five Fingers' reflect the nature of Flynn's more recent compositional voice.
The works in this volume are ideal pieces for use in recitals and competitions. They provide fresh and contrasting challenges for student and professional guitarists alike. These works will be recorded later in 2011 for future release.
