World Premiere of work by Paul Wilson for Flute and Computer
Queen’s University Belfast, School of music and Sonic Arts presents Elizabeth Mc Nutt in a programme of Works for Flute and Computer featuring the world premiere of Audley’s Light by Belfast based composer Paul Wilson. This lunchtime concert takes place on Thursday, 25 November 2010 1.10 pm in the Sonic Lab .
Paul Wilson explains the title: The sounds of a church bell from my hometown, wind moving through trees in the wood beside Audley’s Castle, the weather in the North of Ireland and Elizabeth McNutt’s Alto Flute realisations provided most of the source material for this composition. The initial idea for this piece came from assembling an Alto flute. The act of assembling and disassembling the instrument produced very intimate and barely noticeable sounds. Upon examination, these delicate clicks, dings and rattles began to inspire other sounds that make up the fabric of the composition. Sometimes the sound of the environment dominates the composition and at other times the flute acts as a kind of acoustic impulse that resonates in the performance space and intertwines with the electroacoustic sounds. The image of a low December sun burning beams of light past Audley’s Castle and into the dark forest beyond the castle’s grounds comes to mind…
This lunchtime concert also features works by composers Andrew May and Eric Lyon. All the works featured in the programme were written for Elizabeth Mc Nutt, a Virtuoso flutist who discovered her passion for new and adventurous music almost as soon as she began playing. She has dedicated herself to this path, commissioning and premiering countless new works and becoming an expert interpreter of the masterpieces of the last century. Besides her ongoing collaborations with young and upcoming composers, "commanding flutist Elizabeth McNutt" (LA Times) has worked with such recognized figures as Pierre Boulez, Brian Ferneyhough, Harvey Sollberger, Cort Lippe and Philippe Manoury.
