Cello Notation Masterclass with Matthias Lorenz

9 May 2025 14:30

Contemporary Music Centre

Matthias Lorenz presents a masterclass on notation for cello. This event may be of particular interest to artists, musicians, composers and those writing for cello.

This free, two-hour workshop will focus on notation. The first hour will discuss two different versions of ‘Pression’ by Helmut Lachenmann, concentrating on the quality of notation, with practical demonstration, and how the manner of notation changes the musical result.

The second hour will be an open invitation for artists to ask questions related to all aspects of cello playing, special extended techniques and notation. Artists are welcome to show scores or examples of their own music.

About Matthias

Matthias Lorenz (*1964 in Bensheim/Bergstraße) studied cello with Gerhard Mantel and musicology in Frankfurt am Main. He took summer courses with Siegfried Palm and Wolfgang Boettcher, among others. Since the end of his studies he has worked as a freelance cellist, mainly in contemporary music. In addition to electronic music - which now also includes music with live electronics - there are always other genres. Fringe areas of rock and pop music (together with Albrecht Kunze and Irmin Schmidt), stage music (for the Frankfurt Ballet, among others), improvised music (with Günter Baby Sommer, among others). Over time, his solo playing has been joined by the “elole piano trio” (2001 - since 2018 the “New Piano Trio Dresden” until 2024), in 2003 “ensemble courage”, in 2011 the “Ostravská Banda” and since 2021 the duo Lorenz/Beinhauer.

Based on musical experience and extensive analysis, he tries to develop an understanding of the specific context of each piece. In his solo concert series “Bach.heute” (2007-13), “Old Masters” (2014-19) and “foreign-determined” (2020-26) he comments in detail on the compositions and their construction. In connection with the corona pandemic, Matthias played various concerts live online and developed the “Musical Online Salon” as an open discussion format.
