Galway Theatre Festival: Michelle Read and Brian Keegan's 'On a House Like A Fire'
O'Donoghue Centre for Drama, Theatre & Performance

In this evocative and moving show writer-performer Michelle Read has collaborated with CMC Composer Brian Keegan, to recreate her experience of remembering her mother, Margaret, who lived with Alzheimers. The title comes from Margaret’s misremembering of the phrase, like a house on fire, which for Michelle evoked both the challenge and comfort of her personal memories and inspired her to make the show. On A House Like A Fire is set inside some of these memories including the family home and the coast, where Margaret loved to walk. Told through fragments and glimpses, it is also a reflection on the nature of memory itself. Sometimes in a gesture, or in a turn of phrase, sometimes in the scent of hairspray, or glimpsed in an old photograph, a person reappears.
Michelle and Brian hope audiences’ young and old, will find the show an immersive and lyrical experience, where words and music ebb and flow, like a beach over time and tide.
