In advance of the premiere of a new piece by John McLachlan for flute and piano, Isola, by Emma Coulthard and David Adams on 18 October, the composer talks to CMC’s Jonathan Grimes about the work and writing for flute, using extramusical ideas as a basis for composing, and the need to communicate the ideas behind his works with audiences.
