Brian Irvine announced as Belfast’s first Music Laureate

Established by the the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council, the Music Laureate will undertake a series of artistic duties and activities over the coming year.

As part of this role, Belfast-born Brian Irvine will engage with several large-scale community orientated performance projects working alongside DUMBWORLD, a unique creative production company led by Brian and writer/director John McIlduff.

One of the first projects will be Things We Throw Away, which involves the establishment of a community choir to produce five short operas to be performed in various unusual spaces across the city of Belfast.

Speaking about his appointment, ‘Belfast has a uniquely visceral musical energy and I am proud to be a product of that. I very much look forward to working with a diverse range of people from the city in a series of new dynamic and challenging music projects.’
