Installation and album by Ailis Ní Ríain at the Bronte Parsonage
Composer Ailis Ní Ríain has launched a new installation at the Brontë Parsonage Museum, home of the Brontë family from 1820-1861, titled Linger.
Linger consists of six new works, written on the rarely-played Brontë family piano: each responds to a different room of the parsonage and is designed to be six interlocking parts of a whole. Each will be transmitted into different spaces with elements leaking into one another and forming one whole work.
“Playing the Brontë family piano has been a special and surprising experience. During the various recording sessions at the piano there have been times when I have been overwhelmed by the history surrounding me in the Parsonage and to play the piano which Emily played daily was an incredible experience. Hard to describe, something best expressed through music which is what I have aimed to do with Linger.” – Ailis Ní Ríain
In addition to the installation, the Museum have also launched a 13-track album, with Ní Ríain's six pieces plus works by improvising performers Seth Bennett, Sylvia Hinz and Kelly Jayne Jones, and soundscape pieces and a song by songwriter Tasmin Archer inspired by Anne Brontë's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.
