A new collaborative work by Karen Power is presented at Cork Midsummer Festival

Karen Power

Gorging Limpet is a new collaborative sound and experimental film work created by composer Karen Power and video artist Max le Cain. Taking the form of a site-specific installation, the work will see the collaborating artists take over an empty warehouse space in Cork, and uses audio and visual material recorded in and inspired by the city itself.

The work attempts to conjure a nearly-forgotten industrial past of the city, using sound and video to create a space in which these 'memories' and the living city merge: 'The use of multiple 16mm and 8mm film projections will focus the sense of an alternative city existing at the peripheries of our awareness, forgotten by time, while the soundscape will channel its familiar yet unsettlingly hard-‐to-place cries and murmurs.'

Gorging Limpet was previewed while still in development at the Creative Labs at the recent New Music Dublin festival and will receive its first full installation during the Cork Midsummer Festival from 27 – 29 June at the Marina Commercial Park. It is the second collaboration between Karen Power and Max le Cain, the first being the 2010 audiovisual piece Involuntary Participation, which was premiered in Cork, and will be screened at the Irish Film Institute in Dublin at Synthesis, an audiovisual screening event curated by Fractal's Anna Murray and Philip Lawson, on 11 June.
