Dublin Sound Lab celebrates Beckett's Birthday at the CCI Paris
Dublin Sound Lab presents
SKETCH! music for actor, viola, harpsichord and electronics at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris on the 12 April 2011.
SKETCH! unites new music ensemble Dublin Sound Lab with renowned international violist Garth Knox and Irish actor/mime Bryan Quinn in a unique concert of music for actor, viola, harpsichord and computer at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris. The programme focuses on real-time, computer-based interaction and includes the premiere of Fergal Dowling's 'Sketch!', based on the texts from Samuel Beckett's 'Worstward Ho'. Taking place on the eve of Beckett’s birthday, this performance connects Dublin (where Beckett was born) with Paris, where he spent much of his life. Dowling’s ‘Sketch!’ explores the directness, drive and sardonic humour of Beckett’s text.
The programme includes Jean-Claude Risset's stunning multi-channel 'Pentacle' (harpsichord and tape) and Luca Francesconi's virtuosic 'Animus II' (viola and electronics) both of which feature soloists in dialogue with electronics. Karlheinz Essl's 'More or Less' challenges the soloists to engage as an ensemble under the direction of a computer.
DUBLIN SOUND LAB is a contemporary music performance group specialising in new electroacoustic music and computer-mediated performance. Dublin Sound Lab is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and Dublin City Council, and acknowledges funding from Culture Ireland which has made possible this concert in Paris.
