sonic.art saxophone quartet to tour Dave Fennessy's 'Neon'
The German saxophone ensemble sonic.art are embarking on a Music Network tour of Ireland with a programme that’s heavy on contemporary music. Opening with an arrangement of J.S. Bach’s Italian Concerto, the programme traces a path of works that draw inspiration from the piece, including Irish composer David Fennessy’s Neon.
Neon is a 1997 work for sax quartet that evokes Bach’s work alongside a very different source of inspiration, Bjork’s album Debut, with the former being heard in the ‘bouncing’ contrapuntal lines, and the latter in the slow middle movement. In the words of the composer, ‘I imagined Bach had been transported forward in time and given saxophones to play with’.
The concert takes place on 6 November in the Goethe Institut, Dublin, before touring to Waterford (8th), Drogheda (9th), Birr (10th), Newbridge (11th), Clifden (12th), NUI Galway (13th).
