Culture Night 2013 in CMC

This year CMC will celebrate Culture Night by showcasing the composer at work, intermingled with live performances and a listening room.

Curated by composer Karen Power, the Centre will be open to the public from 5pm to 10pm on 20 September and will feature the work of four composers - Anna Murray, Marian Ingoldsby, Kerry Hagan and Rob Canning - who will take up residency in the Centre for the night.

On the ground floor Anna Murray will be in situ with mezzo-soprano Michelle O’Rourke. Their untitled work is a part-improvised vocal piece, drawing on the singer’s broad range of techniques resulting in a beautiful combination for audiences of classical tones, vocal sounds and live processing. In the library Marian Ingoldsby will present a new departure for her work with a live foray into electro-acoustic composition with Paul Roe on clarinet, while Kerry Hagan’s Requiem for Bb Clarinet and Live Computer will be presented and performed by the composer in CMC’s kitchen! Rob Canning and 4 “sonic explorers” will go out into the city and record sounds as Culture Night unfolds, relaying these sounds back into CMC throughout the night as live performances for the audience.

In addition to these residencies CMC will present emerging new Irish composers Thomas McConville and Lorcan Doherty, with live electronic performances from both in CMC’s courtyard throughout the night.

Visitors are invited to drop in to CMC during between 5–10pm on 20 September to see the composers at work and sample live performances, improvisation and electronic works that give a flavour of the diversity and creativity of Irish music today.

Culture Night takes place annually across 34 towns, cities and counties in Ireland, during which arts and cultural organisations open their doors until late with hundreds of free events, tours, talks and performances. The initiative is co-ordinated by Temple Bar Cultural Trust and supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in partnership with the regional arts offices and local authorities throughout the island of Ireland.
