A new string quartet by Ryan Molloy will be premiered by the Danish String Quartet on 27 November

Ryan Molloy

The new work by the Tyrone-born composer, Gealach Chríoch Lochlann, forms part of a programme of works by the BBC New Generation Artists winners, the Danish String Quartet. Presented by Belfast-based music promoter Moving on Music, the work will be performed in Omagh (27 Nov), Belfast (28, 30 Nov), and Armagh (29 Nov).

Gealach Chríoch Lochlann is inspired by Ryan Molloy’s love of traditional music, an interest shared by the Danish String Quartet. The work was commissioned by Moving on Music with support from the BBC Performing Arts Fund Music Fellowship, a fellowship which the composer secured with Moving on Music earlier this year. The fellowship will allow the composer to work and study with internationally renowned performers and composers.

Composer Ryan Molloy is a well-known musician in local traditional music circles, as well as an accomplished pianist and music teacher. His musical career began at the young age of 7, when he took up the fiddle before moving onto the piano in his teenage years. His recent works have been performed by the EXAUDI Vocal Ensemble, Konvergence Ensemble and the Ulster Orchestra, amongst others.

The Danish String Quartet, who jokingly describe themselves as “your friendly neighborhood string quartet with above average amounts of beard”, have been together for 10 years. A winner of the London International String Quartet Competition in 2009, they were appointed to the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Centre Two programme for the 2013–14 season, and have performed throughout Europe.
