A new work by Vincent Kennedy will be performed in Navan in March

The work, The Chronicles of Meath, will be premiered at the Solstice Arts Centre in Navan on 14 March. Commissioned by the Meath County Council Office under the Per Cent for Art Scheme, the piece is for six harps, and is in seven movements. Each of the movements depicts different times in the history of County Meath: Newgrange, The Hill of Tara - The Hill of Slane, The Book of Kells, O'Carolan's Arrival, Lament at the Boyne, an arrangement of O'Carolan's Concerto, and finally, Have You Ever Been To Nobber In the County of Meath?

The performance comes soon after the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras special achievement award for Vincent Kennedy's children's musical The Happy Prince, a retelling of the Oscar Wilde story by playwright John Nee. The work was commissioned by the Donegal County Council Public Art Programme, and has received a number of recent performances by the Donegal Youth Orchestra and Donegal Youth Choir. The award was presented to Kennedy and Donegal VEC Music Education Partnership's Music Development Manager Angela McLaughlin at the National Concert Hall on 9 February.
