The BBC Symphony Orchestra performs Linda Buckley’s Chiyo during February
The work will be performed on Friday, 17 February 2012 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra as part of the orchestra’s BBC SO Studio Concerts Series 2011-12. Chiyo was originally commissioned by RTÉ for the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and was first performed in May 2011 in the National Concert Hall. The work is inspired by the haiku poetry of Chiyo-ni, who is widely regarded as one the greatest female haiku poets.
Linda Buckley is originally from Cork and now based in Dublin. She is a member of the Spatial Music Collective, and is RTÉ lyric fm’s current Composer-in-Residence.
The concert will also feature works by three young composers, Jack White, Yuko Ohara and Laura Bowler, whose compositions are the result of workshops with the BBC Symphony Orchestra as part of the Sound & Music/BBCSO Embedded Project. The programme concludes with British composer Richard Causton’s Between Two Waves of the Sea for orchestra and pre-recorded orchestra.
