A new work by Adam Melvin features in a concert in Derry and Belfast

The event features new music duos rarescale in a performance of new music for quarter-tone bass flute and electronics performed by flautist Carla Rees and Michael Oliva (electronics). The concerts take place in Derry on 24 April and Belfast on 26 April.

Formed in 2003 by alto flute player, Carla Rees, rarescale has gained international acclaim for its commitment to developing new music for the alto and bass flute, in particular the unique Kingma system, quarter-tone versions of those instruments

The result of a collaboration between the ensemble and composer Adam Melvin along with his long time collaborative partner (and brother) Mark Melvin, Fulgurite Chamber is the first ever intermedia work created to feature the Kingma system bass flute. Incorporating electronic sound, live flautist and a series of light boxes and neon sculptures, the piece seeks to explore the potential meeting points between its component parts, often focusing on deconstructed elements at the heart of its material make up, as a means of engaging with notions of locality, dialogue, movement, co-existence and memory. The work was commissioned through an Arts Council Music Project Commission.

Also featured are works by Brian Bridges, Michael Oliva, Claes Biehl and Luciano Berio.

The performances take place at the Ebrington Square (Stable block), Derry on 24 April at 8.30pm and the Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast on 26 April, also at 8.30pm. Tickets: £5 / £3.
